Hanımeli is a Turkish home-cooking restaurant on Stoke Newington Road in Dalston, serving breakfast all day alongside the kind of dishes usually made in a family kitchen. Hanımeli Dalston rolls its dough by hand each morning, starts its stews before opening and minces its own certified halal meat.
Breakfast is the big draw, above all the serpme kahvaltı, a spread of around twenty small plates for two with unlimited tea, plus menemen, çılbır, pişi and simit tava. Later in the day the menu turns to hand-pinched mantı with yoghurt and paprika butter, gözleme filled to order, içli köfte and vine-leaf sarma, with künefe to finish.
It is relaxed and good value, and suits long weekend breakfasts with friends as well as a quick, comforting lunch on your own.
Come for the breakfast spread, or try the home-style dishes the kitchen makes by hand:
Hanımeli is a cosy, unpretentious room with banquette seating, a counter and a few tables outside on Stoke Newington Road. It opens at 7am every day and closes at 7pm, with breakfast served throughout, so it is busiest at weekend mornings. Service is warm and quick.
The meat is certified halal. Vegetarians are well served by the breakfast plates, gözleme, menemen and meze. Portions are large, so order with care. Tables can be booked online, which is worth doing for weekend breakfast.
Monday to Sunday: 07:00–19:00. Hours can change on bank holidays, so check with the restaurant before you travel.
Dalston Kingsland Overground station is about a 5-minute walk south, and Dalston Junction Overground is around 8 minutes away. Buses 67, 76, 149 and 243 run along Stoke Newington Road and stop just outside. Dalston Junction is also served by the 30, 38, 56, 236, 242 and 277, which stop around the junction a few minutes’ walk south.
