Mangal 1 Ocakbasi is a Turkish grill house on Arcola Street in Dalston and one of the original ocakbaşı restaurants that put this corner of Hackney on London’s food map. Founded by Istanbul-born Ali Dirik, Mangal 1 Dalston is the older sibling of Mangal 2 around the corner.

The set-up is simple: a big charcoal mangal by the entrance, around two dozen kebabs, and the usual Turkish starters and salads. Regulars come for the çöp şiş, the tavuk beyti wrapped in lavash, köfte and lamb chops, ordered as a mixed platter to share with hot flatbread.

It is small, no-frills and bring-your-own, which keeps the bill low and makes it a favourite for groups of friends, families and anyone who wants straightforward grilled meat done properly.

What to order at Mangal 1

Grab a seat near the grill and order a mix of these.

  • Çöp Şiş – small cubes of lamb on skewers, charred over charcoal
  • Tavuk Beyti – minced chicken kebab wrapped in lavash bread
  • Köfte – grilled minced-lamb kebab
  • Lamb chops – charcoal-grilled pirzola
  • Sweetbreads – grilled uykuluk for the more adventurous
  • Mixed grill platter – a selection from the mangal to share
  • Aubergine moussaka – a baked aubergine dish from the starters and sides

Atmosphere and good to know

This is a compact, no-frills dining room built around the open charcoal grill, so expect smoke, noise and a cramped room on busy nights. It is walk-in, child-friendly and works well for groups, and takeaway is available.

Mangal 1 has no alcohol licence, so diners bring their own beer or wine; off-licences on Stoke Newington Road are close by. Vegetarian choice is limited to starters and salads. Halal status is not published, so ask staff. It opens from noon daily, until midnight, or 1am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Mangal 1 opening hours

Monday to Thursday: 12:00–midnight; Friday to Saturday: 12:00–01:00; Sunday: 12:00–midnight. Hours can change on bank holidays, so check with the restaurant before you travel.

How to get to Mangal 1

Dalston Kingsland Overground station is about a 6-minute walk away, and Dalston Junction is around 10 minutes on foot. Buses 67, 76, 149 and 243 run along nearby Stoke Newington Road, a couple of minutes’ walk from Arcola Street, which runs off its eastern side.
