Efes Restaurant & Bar is a long-running Turkish restaurant on Maple Street in Fitzrovia, in the shadow of the BT Tower. Efes Fitzrovia takes its name from the ancient city of Ephesus and from the first London restaurant its founder Kazim opened back in 1974, and he still works in the kitchen.

The menu is classic Turkish grill-house cooking: cold and hot meze, köfte and döner, lamb şiş and pirzola, and house dishes such as Ali Nazik, Beyti and İskender. Meze platters and family sharing platters for three to six people make ordering easy for groups, and there’s a decent vegetarian section.

It suits office lunches, birthday dinners and anyone who wants a traditional Turkish meal close to Warren Street and Great Portland Street.

What to order at Efes

Start with a meze platter, then pick from the grill and the Turkish classics.

  • Cold Meze Platter – hummus, baba ghanoush, cacık, taramasalata and tabbouleh
  • Hot Meze Platter – falafel, halloumi, börek, sucuk and calamari for two
  • Özel Karışık Kebap – the house signature mixed grill
  • Ali Nazik – smoked aubergine purée topped with lamb
  • Beyti – minced lamb wrapped in lavash with cheese
  • Kuzu İskender – döner over bread with tomato sauce and yoghurt
  • Kaburga – charcoal-grilled lamb ribs
  • Fındık Lahmacun – mini Turkish flatbreads with spiced mince

Atmosphere and good to know

Inside it’s dimly lit and relaxed, with shelves of bottles behind the bar and a few streetside tables in warmer months. The bar serves cocktails alongside the food, and the large sharing platters make it a popular choice for leaving dos and group celebrations.

Vegetarian mains are marked on the menu, and dishes containing sesame are flagged. Tables can be booked through the website, and there’s an online ordering page for collection or delivery. It’s open from noon until midnight every day.

Efes opening hours

Monday to Sunday: 12:00–midnight. Hours can change on bank holidays, so check with the restaurant before you travel.

How to get to Efes
