Roca Mangal Woolwich is a Turkish restaurant on Shooters Hill, on the main road between Woolwich Common and Blackheath. Since 2018 it has been cooking its meats over natural wood charcoal, and it has built a loyal following for its grills, meze and good-value set menus.

Cold starters include patlıcan ezme, cacık, hummus and baba ganoush, and hot ones run from spinach and feta börek to sucuk, ciğer tava and calamari. The charcoal grill covers chicken and lamb şiş, Adana köfte, chicken köfte, wings and lamb chops, with combination plates and a Roca Platter for four. Speciality dishes include mantı, İskender and lamb or chicken nazik kebab on smoky aubergine and garlic yoghurt.

With Turkish wines and cocktails, a kids menu and a two- or three-course set menu, Roca Mangal suits families, groups and couples alike.

Atmosphere and good to know

Roca Mangal presents its food in a welcoming, smartly turned-out dining room, and it is well set up for groups, with platters for two and four people and a kids menu. Vegetarian dishes include moussaka, falafel and a vegetable casserole, and several meze can be made vegan.

Alcohol is served, including Turkish wines, signature cocktails and beer. The restaurant does not state on its site whether the meat is halal, so ask when booking. It opens in the evenings on weekdays and from lunchtime at weekends, and online booking is recommended for weekends.
