Beyti Ocakbaşı is a Turkish restaurant at 113 Green Lanes, at the Newington Green end of north London’s best-known Turkish high street. From the pavement it looks much like a kebab takeaway, but behind the counter is a proper sit-down dining room with a charcoal grill (ocakbaşı) at its heart.

The menu is long and traditional. Alongside lamb şiş, Adana and the house namesake, beyti kebab, there are Akçaabat köfte, kaburga (lamb ribs), quail, sac tava and mantı, plus a run of hot and cold meze from haydari and imam bayıldı to mücver and Yörük ciğeri. Sea bass, sardines and swordfish fill out the grill section.

It suits a relaxed weeknight dinner, a family meal or a group sharing mixed meze and a grill platter, and it also delivers through Uber Eats for nights in.

What to order at Beyti Ocakbaşı

Beyti’s menu runs to well over a hundred dishes, so these are good places to start.

  • Beyti Kebab – the restaurant’s namesake, minced kebab from the charcoal grill, in lamb or chicken (tavuk) versions
  • Adana Kebab – spiced minced lamb grilled on a wide skewer over charcoal
  • Akçaabat Köfte – grilled meatballs in the style of the Black Sea town of Akçaabat
  • Kaburga – charcoal-grilled lamb ribs
  • Sac Tava – lamb cooked with onions, tomatoes and parsley
  • İskender Kebab – döner over bread with tomato sauce and yoghurt
  • Mantı – small Turkish dumplings, listed among the house specials
  • Ispanak Tarator – spinach with yoghurt and garlic, from the cold meze

Atmosphere and good to know

The dining room is cosy and personal, decorated with kilims, lanterns, boxing gloves and Arsenal scarves, with red flowers on each table. It is casual and works well for groups, and the menu includes set meze and meal deals for four, which keeps ordering simple for a table of friends or family.

Wine, rakı and Efes beer are listed on the menu. Vegetarians have a fair choice, including vegetarian moussaka, cheese börek, yaprak dolma and a vegetable kebab. Halal status is not published, so ask staff if it matters to you. Beyti is open daily from 11am to 11pm; for larger groups, call ahead on 020 7704 3165.
